The Situation: Several years ago, a mid-sized
landscaping firm in the Midwest decided to launch a
small retail store to sell plants and lawn and gardening
supplies and accessories. Knowing it would be impossible
to compete with against bigger "corporate"
retailers carrying similar plants and products, we were
able to help them develop a unique marketing strategy
and positioning.
The Solution: We recommended a pricing
and product mix strategy that called for to competitively
priced, superior quality plants and flowers, along with
unique varieties rarely found at retail stores. We further
positioned the company as a knowledgeable landscaping
and gardening resource, where customers could receive
personalized attention from trained landscape and garden
professionals. We began a series of very successful
gardening seminars that were soon imitated by many in
the marketplace. One of the additional marketing tools
created to support this direction was Green
and Growing, a quarterly newsletter mailed
to a database of 8,000 customers. Coupons in the newsletter
helped drive traffic to the store and measure sales
against their advertising investment. Sales profits
from redemption of the very first coupon were significant
enough to cover the annual budget of the newsletter
and generate $35,000 in additional sale—a remarkable
900% sales return on the original marketing investment.
The awareness the coupon and corresponding newspaper
campaign generated was immeasurable.
